All The Hype That Money Can Buy

I was over at the Ritchie/Powell Residence the other night for a lovely shared meal, where I got talking to Rhett about the old days when I used to review music for the Baptist and he used to read my reviews in the Baptist (he was also jealous of my trend setting hair style). Of course we didn’t know each other back then. I think Jacob might have been in on the conversation as well when I was explaining why I don’t review music anymore. I promised I’d let them read a copy of the Parachute review that essentially got me fired from the music reviewing business. If you click on the small image you should (if blogger works the way I’m hoping it does) get a large enough image to read. It’s probably worth noting that this is the EDITED version. It’s also probably worth noting that I wanted to talk to Parachute before submitting my review, but they were a little hesitant to talk to media post Festival and declined all my requests. The good thing is that my wonderful editors let me continue (and expand) with my DVD reviews, and I have access to as much music as I want through my current job. It’s funny how some things work out for good.

Nice!

Grrr, what makes Parachute think they can do that to you? Makes me angry. Must everyone sing their praises? I thought most of the things you identified as problems were bang on... especially the lgith towers and the sound: horrible in 2004! At least now they've fixed that for the mostpart (though sound is still a bit iffy).

Only one point I'd dissagree with you on... I've been to Parachute 6 years straight and 2003 sticks out in mymind as having the WORST lineup ever. That's probably because I am not interested in Toby Mac or Out of Eden. In fact the only band I recall digging that year was Tree63.

2001 and 2005 had to be the biggest years from my point of view... 2001 was Third Day, Newboys, Audio A and Paul Coleman Trio. 2005 was Third Day, Auido A, Shawn McDonald, Day of Fire.

Still... bring on David Crowded Band and Switchfoot and I'll be happy.

When they invite Daniel Johnston, I'll definitely be back.

Rhett: I was reffering to the number of 'Headliners' not the quality of Headliners ;o)

Jacob: Get a life, get a blog, and don't hold your breath for Daniel Johnston...

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Frank: First lets make it clear that I love the Parachute Festival – it’s a great event, and I have a mostly great working relationship with Parachute. However, to be fair to my editors it was not entirely their decision – if they were uncomfortable with the review they would have not run it. When (and I’ll keep names out of this) someone from Parachute read my review, they emailed someone in the Baptist leadership to complain, who emailed back their concerns over my review. (Someone else at Parachute emailed me the email transcript to explain why they could no longer send me music for review – the email transcript is funny in an ironic way, as the main Biblical argument they make, they themselves fail on, not me, but that’s another story!) The person in Baptist leadership then contacted the editors and expressed their desire that Parachute be allowed to review music, and not me. When I contacted the Editors they said that they still wanted me to do the DVD reviews (and allowed me the same amount of space) but that Parachute now wanted to do their own music reviews.

Let me also stress that I hold no malice thoughts against either organization mentioned – I look back now and see it as a funny story, one of many points in my journey that has lead to better things. I still work happily with both organizations, and will continue to do so in the future.

Ahh ha ha ha ha...(manaiacal laughter - for the uninitiated). Go the community Blog! It has set me free to roam the blogosphere at will whilst still remaining a dissenter!

What was the deleted comment (or is asking bad netform)?

Uncle Jakey.

The deleted comment was me trying to post a response to Frank and Blogger not letting me, and then Blogger publishing it twice.... oh the joy...
